Why do little kids hear The ABC Song everyday, but never a counting song? Okay, so ‘never’ is an overstatement, but ask an adult to sing The Counting Song, or The Number Song. “Huh?”

This matters. Our alphabet has a meaningless sequence. It’s a convention useful for making lists and seating students. [I.e. There's nothing about the essence of "J" that comes before "M" but after "C".] Numbers, on the other hand… !

No doubt it’s true in both cases that kids would be learning a sequence of sounds, meaning to be attached later. But I’d take preschoolers who can count over those who can ‘alphabet’ any day…

Conclusion: We need a ubiquitous counting song. A cultural anchor, on par with The ABC Song. Any candidates?

PS – I mean it about taking over this blog Yosef… better get moving.
