High five NYC

I think this is a much better way of showing unprovoked friendliness than “Free Hugs.” I think I just like the lack of consent for the high-fives

The Timaeus

Great literature grows with you as you move through life, a generally appreciated phenomenon. You notice more, and hence enjoy more. For example, this jumped out at me as I was rereading the Timaeus:

“Revised by order of the Jowett Copyright Trustees, Oxford, 1953.”

This line protects a 19th century translation probably through 2048. I apologize, that last sentence is slightly wrong… it’s a revised 19th century translation. Revision ordered by copyright trustees. But our laws are to protect creative endeavor, right?

Ahh, the classics.

Who’s Adam Kissel?

This page is concise, interesting reading for those interested in education. Or, if you’re interested in your own education, back up to his main page and surf the links, or get ideas from the reading lists.

Many salient passages, but this one stood out to me:

Undoubtedly, fine associations, fine buildings, green grass, good food, and exercise are excellent things for anybody. You will note that they are exactly what is advertised by every resort hotel. The only reason why they are also advertised by every college and university is that we have no coherent educational program to announce.

Bassie’s B-Day T-Shirt?

These three t-shirts ( #1, #2, #3) are pretty rad, right? If only they had children sizes. Would you want a big one for pajamas, maybe?

ABC . 123

Why do little kids hear The ABC Song everyday, but never a counting song? Okay, so ‘never’ is an overstatement, but ask an adult to sing The Counting Song, or The Number Song. “Huh?”

This matters. Our alphabet has a meaningless sequence. It’s a convention useful for making lists and seating students. [I.e. There's nothing about the essence of "J" that comes before "M" but after "C".] Numbers, on the other hand… !

No doubt it’s true in both cases that kids would be learning a sequence of sounds, meaning to be attached later. But I’d take preschoolers who can count over those who can ‘alphabet’ any day…

Conclusion: We need a ubiquitous counting song. A cultural anchor, on par with The ABC Song. Any candidates?

PS – I mean it about taking over this blog Yosef… better get moving.

Picking Up the Slack

I have decided to take over this blog until Yosef reasserts a presence… and cheaply thrown together links don’t count.

After further review, No Line on the Horizon is an awesome song. [And a pretty good album, for that matter.] Pretend it’s not U2. New to the scene, first single. Put on your best headphones. Surf the web, turn it up.

Time is irrelevant
It’s not linear
Then she put her tongue in my ear

Genius.

Best. Blog. Ever.
