When the U.S. Army came out with its first "official" video game release (see http://www.americasarmy.com/gallery/ and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2438695.stm for an article), I wondered why it was necessary. Aren't all the kids already in their imaginations killing everyone they see? But then I realized what it is.

Yes, our children are trained killers. But that super killing instinct has to be properly directed. In the old days, the only respectable path for a kid who wanted to kill people was the military. Nowadays, all paths of killing are acceptable to society. Just pick up an automatic or semi-automatic weapon from a gun show, jump in your SUV and you're off... The Army had to resort to early brand imprinting in the nation's youth to ensure that only THEY would be in control of these killers.

Video games have always been a tool of the armed forces. How do you think teenage boys learn that killing people is cool, and that you never really "die," you just have to start the level over?

I'd make the Simpsons reference, but I'm sure everyone reading this has already done it for him/herself. Man, that show changed the world. All of our synapses are permanently altered to include at least one Simpsons connection per thought, kind of like how the drug prevention guy taught us that LSD stays in your brain for years and gets retriggered with the right mix of chemical reactions.
